At The Center for Cosmetic and Restorative Dentistry, Dr. Tanya Brown & Dr. Matthew Cawley are committed to protecting not only your smile—but your overall health. April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month, a critical reminder of the importance of early detection and the role your oral health plays in your systemic wellness.

Early Detection Starts in the Dental Chair
OralDNA Bacterial testingOral cancer affects thousands of Americans every year, often with outcomes tied closely to how early it’s detected. That’s why your preventive dental maintenance appointments with Dr. Tanya Brown, Dr. Matthew Cawley, and our hygiene team are so important. These visits aren’t just for “cleanings” and cavity checks—they’re a vital opportunity for us to screen for suspicious lesions, unusual changes in tissue, and other signs that may indicate the earliest stages of oral cancer.

Our Dental team is trained to identify potential warning signs during preventive exams. When caught early, oral cancer is much more treatable—and that early detection can save lives.

Oral Bacteria and the Cancer Connection
Emerging research continues to shed light on how the health of your mouth impacts your entire body. Recent studies have linked certain oral bacteria to an increased risk of head and neck cancers. These harmful microbes can fuel chronic inflammation and disrupt immune system responses—conditions that may help cancer take “root”.

One bacteria of particular interest is Fusobacterium nucleatum, commonly found in patients with periodontal (gum) disease. Elevated levels of this bacteria have been discovered in patients with head and neck cancers, as well as other cancers such as colorectal cancer. Scientists believe F. nucleatum may promote tumor growth by encouraging inflammation and weakening the body’s natural defenses.

This connection reinforces the importance of keeping your gums healthy—not just for a fresh smile, but for your long-term health. It’s also why we offer OralDNA Bacterial testing at our office. By identifying harmful bacteria like F. nucleatum, Dr. Tanya Brown & Dr. Matthew Cawley  will customize your care plan to help reduce your risk and support a healthier immune system.

Reducing Your Risk
While some risk factors for oral cancer—like genetics—are out of our control, there are several ways you can protect yourself:

  • Avoid tobacco and limit alcohol consumption
  • Maintain excellent oral hygiene
  • Keep up with preventive dental exams, Oral Cancer Screenings, and professional Hygiene appointments
  • Use sun protection on your lips
  • Stay informed about HPV and vaccination options

Interestingly, new research suggests that certain everyday habits may help lower your risk. A recent study found that drinking tea and coffee may reduce the risk of head and neck cancers, thanks to the antioxidant properties found in both beverages. While more research is needed, this offers an encouraging reminder that small, healthy habits can make a difference.
