Airway Prosthodontics

Airway Prosthodontics is the study of the impact that a dysfunctional airway has on the stomatognathic system. The stomatognathic system is the anatomical system comprising of the teeth, jaws, and associated soft tissues.  Research studies have shown that some dental issues can be triggered by a compromised airway.

What is Airway Prosthodontics?

  • Airway Prosthodontics Therapy is a systematic protocol to alleviate your dental problem by improving your ability to breathe more efficiently during sleep
  • Airway Prosthodontics Therapy has been designed to help determine the best treatment options for you
  • There are six possible phases of the therapy over a 3-month time frame
  • Airway Prosthodontics Therapy is designed to minimize the possible harmful effects of Sleep Disordered Breathing

What causes a Compromised Airway?

• Malocclusion/Malalignment of your Teeth and/or Jaws

• Facial Structure/Anatomy that restricts airflow-large tongue

• Enlarged tonsils

• Mouth Breathing

• Allergies

• Sleep Disordered Breathing

• Obesity

• Hormonal changes- Menopause/Perimenopause

How Does Airway Prosthodontics Work?

Airway prosthodontics works by addressing the underlying causes of airway obstruction. Oral sleep appliances are worn during sleep to gently shift the jaw forward, keeping the airway open and reducing the occurrence of apneas and snoring. Mandibular advancement devices also reposition the lower jaw to prevent the tongue from collapsing into the airway. These devices are custom-made to fit the patient's mouth comfortably and effectively.

What are the Symptoms of a Compromised Airway?

A compromised airway can manifest through various symptoms that significantly impact your quality of life. Some common symptoms include:

• Difficulty sleeping- falling asleep, staying asleep

• Poor quality sleep- feelings of restlessness, fatigue

• Snoring

• Sleep Apnea

• Insomnia

• Headaches in the morning

• TMJ Pain or tenderness

• Difficulty with Nasal Breathing

• Neurocognitive Changes/Decline

What are the benefits of Airway Prosthodontics Therapy?

• Reduce TMJ Pain/Jaw Pain

• Improved Breathing & Sleep

• Realigning the jaw position in proper balance

• Airway Prosthodontic Therapy is a conservative option

• Helps in determining the best treatment options for you

• Creates a trial period with different control strategies

How Airway Prosthodontics Can Help

Addressing airway issues through our specialized treatments can have profound benefits. Enhanced airflow and reduced obstructions help you fall asleep more easily and stay asleep throughout the night, leading to more restorative sleep. Customized oral appliances or orthodontic treatments can reposition your jaw and tongue, keeping your airway open and reducing or eliminating snoring and sleep apnea episodes. By addressing airway obstructions and ensuring proper breathing, our treatments can help alleviate insomnia and improve overall sleep patterns. Improved airway function reduces the strain and interruptions in breathing that often cause morning headaches. By correcting jaw alignment and enhancing airway function, we can alleviate the pain and tenderness associated with TMJ disorders. Our treatments can help open up nasal passages, facilitating easier and more effective nasal breathing. Enhanced sleep quality and better oxygenation can lead to improved cognitive function, memory, and concentration, reducing the risk of neurocognitive decline.
